Located in the little town of San Pedro de Poas in Alajuela, this volcano along with Arenal Volcano is one of the most active on the country its constants emanations of gases and acid rain are so hard sometimes that as a security measure the entrance for the public is closed. Poas Volcano is one of the highest points in the country set at 8 864 feet you can watch the most amazing views of both oceans Pacific and Atlantic.

The volcano counts three craters and various lake filled vents, the main crater is consider as one of the widest craters of the world with diameter of 1.5 km (0.9 miles) and 300 meters (900 feet) of depth you will find a lagoon which spews boiling gases with suphur in it.

Besides its main crater the other attraction of Poas is Lagoon Botos which its crystalline water unlike other lakes has the difference of being cold a very rare characteristic.

The weather at the volcano is quite different from the rest of the country the area has its own microclimate which makes very difficult to forecast if it is in fact to be rainy or sunny, although the area it is known for the large amount of rain falling along the year mostly during the afternoon, but do not worry if you are lucky and patient you will have the chance to enjoy the magnificence of Poas Volcano National Park.
