Irazu is located at approximately 45 minute drive from Cartago. The Irazu volcano is the highest in Costa Rica (3432mts), and is known for its light green water in its main crater. The last big eruption of this volcano was in 1963 when tons of ash felt from the sky and damaged many homes.
The volcano is located in a park that covers about 2400 hectares and is located at 50km from San Jose. In this area there is not much wild life because of the volcano activity. The best things to do in here is walk to the top of Diego de la Haya crater and watch the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean from the top of the Irazu.
The Irazu Volcano made its first major eruption March 19th, 1963 the same day that former US President J.F. Kennedy visited Costa Rica, the next two years had fall outs eruptions of ash that could go as far as San Jose. This volcano is also known as Irazu Volcano National Park one of the most visited national parks in the country due to the beauty of the volcano main crater coloring that changes from a very light green to red depending on the day and it is also one of the coldest places in the area its average temperature is 45° F.
